San Juan de Castri

En la parte septentrional de la isla existe una ermita única en el mundo.

Esta es su historia:

Hace muchos años, un habitante de Glossa (el segundo pueblo de la isla) estaba pescando por la zona. Al caer la noche puso rumbo hacia Keramoto, puerto utilizado por la gente de Glossa, para regresar a su pueblo.

Cuando pasaba cerca de una enorme roca, que parecía haber sido colocada ahí por la mano de un gigante, vio una pequeña luz en la cima.

Al principio se extrañó mucho porque sabía que era muy difícil acceder a lo alto de la roca. Por un momento pensó que era culpa de un espejismo, una trampa tendida por las estrellas del cielo despejado.

Unos días después, al atardecer, mientras regresaba de pescar, volvió a ver esa misma luz. El miedo se apoderó de él y pensó que quizá estaba perdiendo el juicio e imaginaba cosas. Sin embargo, no dijo ni una palabra a nadie.

Esa noche el pescador tuvo un extraño sueño: una hermosa mujer que se parecía a la Virgen le dijo que en la cima de la roca había una imagen y que era necesario que la vieran todos los habitantes del pueblo.

El pescador se despertó lleno de pánico y fue a buscar al cura del pueblo para contarle lo que la Virgen le había mandado hacer. Poco antes de que amaneciera, el cura y el pescador, junto con otros habitantes del pueblo, se encaminaron hacia la roca siendo también ellos testigos de este suceso.

Así pues, decidieron construir unos peldaños para poder llegar a la cima. Durante meses trabajaron con paciencia y cuando al fin llegaron a la cima descubrieron con asombro un viejo icono de San Juan Bautista.

Con gran respeto se lo llevaron y lo colocaron en la ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Anunciación que se halla frente a la roca. Sin embargo, al día siguiente, para sorpresa de éstos, encontraron el icono encima de la roca.

Supusieron que se trataba de una señal divina y que el icono prefería estar en su lugar original.

Todos los habitantes del pueblo decidieron dejar de trabajar durante el tiempo que fuera necesario para poder construir una ermita en la cima de la roca que albergase el icono del Santo. Esta labor fue muy dura pues cargaban con todas sus herramientas y con el agua hasta alcanzar la cima.

Con el esfuerzo y dedicación de estos hombres se pudo construir la iglesia con los 105 peldaños. Cerca de la ermita hay plantado un pino y 2 ó 3 olivos.
