Cabra Skópelos

 

La cabra Skópelos se caracteriza por ser un animal grande (machos y hembras adultos tienen un peso medio de unos 75 kg. y  unos 55 kg. respectivamente) con características físicas particulares debido principalmente a las condiciones ambientales en las que vive y a la mejora genética.

Durante años, con el propósito de mejorar el índice de productividad de sus rebaños, los productores de esta región han aplicado la reproducción controlada, seleccionando a aquellos animales que les permita alcanzar este objetivo.

Hoy en día, esta raza se cría en las islas de Skópelos, Alonissos, Skiathos, y también se puede encontrar en otras pequeñas islas despobladas como Kira Panagiá, Peristera, Gioura, Skátzoura, Piperi y Psathoura.

A diferencia del resto de las cabras en Grecia, esta raza tiene el pelaje corto y suave de color rojizo con manchas por lo general blancas. Se caracteriza por su cabeza triangular con trazos rectos, y la mayoría presenta cuernos en forma de espada y orejas pequeñas y erguidas.

En comparación con otras razas que viven en condiciones similares como la raza Damasco y Malta, la cabra Skópelos produce la mayor cantidad de leche. Durante el periodo 2005-2006 la producción de leche alcanzó los 329 Lts (192 días de ordeño).

Entre los  5,4 millones de cabras que se crían hoy en día en toda Grecia, la cabra Skópelos es la única raza que viene acompañada por un certificado genealógico.

El certificado genealógico (pedigree) es un documento que informa sobre el árbol genealógico de cada animal, su productividad y la de sus progenitores, al igual que los distintos valores relativos a la reproducción que sirven para selecccionar a los animales más productivos.

El certificado genealógico recoge la siguiente información:

1.   Organismo de expedición   

2.   Denominación  del libro genealógico

3.   Número de registro del libro genealógico

4.   Sistema de Identificación  (código en el crotal)

5.   Fecha de nacimiento y sexo del animal

6.   Datos personales y dirección del propietario-criador

7.   Origen del animal reproductor con códigos crotales de sus progenitores y abuelos

8.   Últimos registros del control de producción y de las cualidades genéticas del animal, de sus progenitores y abuelos.

9.   Lugar y fecha de expedición

10. Firma del responsable para el cumplimiento del libro genealógico.

En la provincia de Skópelos se estima que el número total de cría de cabras alcanza los 11.000 animales aproximadamente.
