礼拝堂に納められた聖ジョン (1)

 

島の北側に大変ユニークな小さな礼拝堂があります。その礼拝堂に関しての昔話です。

大昔、スコペロス島で２番目に大きな集落のグロッサ村に住むある男性が魚釣りに出かけました。夕方になったので彼は帰ろうと、当時多くの人々が使っていたケラモト港に向けてボートを漕ぎ出しました。するとちょうど高く盛上がった岩を通りがかった時、その岩の上に小さな光が灯っているように見え、誰かがいるように感じました。でもそんな筈はない、岩は物凄く大きく、高く、岩壁もほぼ垂直で人が登れる訳はないと自分に言い聞かせました。彼は単に幻覚か星の光が反射していただけと思っていました。

数日後、また釣りから戻る途中に同じ小さな光が見えました。今度は存在しない物が見えるとなると、頭がおかしくなり始めたかと怖くなりました。でも、誰にもそれを言わずにいました。

ところがその夜、彼は夢を見ました。夢の中に聖母マリアのように美しい女性が現れました。彼女はその岩の上には聖なる絵画が置いてあり、すべての島の住人が鑑賞しないといけないと言いました。彼は怖くなり、目覚めてしまい、すぐに村の教会の司祭を訪ね、夢の話を伝えました。夜が明ける前、村人全員がその岩に行きました。すると、小さな光は岩の上で灯っていました。それでは岩の頂上に登れるようにしようと、皆で岩壁に足場を彫り出すことになりました。

何ヶ月もかけて、やっと垂直の岩に登れるような足場が完成し、村人全員で岩の頂上に登ると、聖ジョンの描かれた古い絵画を見つけたのです。そして絵を岩の向かい側にあるエバンゲリストリア礼拝堂に持ち帰り、飾りました。ところが、その翌日になると、いつの間にか絵は岩の頂上に戻ってしまったのです。住民らは驚き、これは神のお告げであろう、絵は元の場所である岩の上に置かなければならないと言い出しました。であればどんなに長い月日が必要でも岩の上に礼拝堂を建設しようと決めました。大きな岩の上までたくさんの建設材料や水を運ばないと建設できないので困難な作業になりました。やっとのことで105段の階段を持つ礼拝堂が完成し、その中に絵画を納め、周りには一本の松と数本のオリーブの木を植えたとの話が残っています。
