Saint John on the Castle

In the northern side of the island is a small chapel which is unique in the whole world!

This is the story of this chapel.

A long long time ago a man who lived in Glossa (the second biggest village in Skopelos) had gone fishing. When the night came he set sail for Keramoto, the small port people used, to go back to Glossa village. As he passed by a very high rock, that looks as if someone has pushed it into the sea, he saw a small but steady light on the top of the rock. He thought that this was very strange, since the rock was too high for any man to climb on, and the sides of the rock are almost vertical. He believed that he saw a mirage, a reflection from the star bright sky.

A few days later he saw the same light again, as he returned from his fishing again. He, then, got scared, fearing that he was beginning to loose his sense, and seeing things that didn’t existed, but didn’t tell anything about it to anyone.

But in his dream, that same night, he saw a beautiful woman looking like Holy Mary. She told him that on top of that rock lies a holy painting that all villagers should see. The fisherman woke up scared and run to the priest of the village and told him what he had dreamed about. Before the sun came out all the villagers went to the rock and they all saw the light on top of it. So they decided to build a stare to climb on the rock.

They worked with patience for months carving the vertical rock and when one day they made their way to the top, they found an old painting of Saint John. They took the painting and placed it to the chapel of Evangelistria which opposite the high rock. The next day they where all quite surprised to find out that the painting was back at the top of the rock. They all said that this was a sign from God and that the painting should stay on the rock, where they found it. So they decided to let their works for as long as it would take them to build a small chapel on the top of the rock. This was rather difficult since they had to get up there a lot of materials and water. So the chapel with the 105 steps was built there. They also planted a pine and two or three olive trees.
