Chadoula

We owe most of the historical data, referring on the last 5 centuries (1400 – 1900) about Sporades, to various explorers and geographers. They left us a priceless heritage. A great collection of texts from geographers and travelers, from 15^th until the 19^th century, was compiled in 1997 by Adamantios Samson. His book can be found in the folk art museum of Skopelos. It is a great work, one of the many that this bright man from Skopelos has done for the next generations to inherit.

We have copied the translation from his book “Wanderers and Geographers of North Sporades” the report of an English wanderer named Bernard Randolph, The present state of the island in the Archipelago, Oxford 1687: “At the north side of Skopelos is a large port named Porto Palerma, where the Venetians often come. Here stands a high castle that defended the port from the Venetians for a short period, but in the end the locals had to surrender and pay an annual fee in order to keep their privileges and not being obliged to ask for a military guard from them. Here live many merchants that have commercial affairs with Cairo and other places…”

At those times and just before Skiathos was pillaged by the Turkish admiral Morozinis in 1660, a very rich merchant lived in Skopelos. He owned many ships that sailed the Mediterranean and he had one daughter named Chadoula. A beautiful girl, raised like a princess. In their mansion, which was the biggest in Skopelos, could one find gold, silk, amber, mastic, myrrh and incense. Many men were in love with her, but she was in love with a young noble man from Glossa. It didn’t took long for the young man to ask from her father to marry her. Her father accepted with joy and after a few days they were engaged. But life was cruel to the young couple…

Admiral Morozinis had Skopelos included in his plans, and he wanted to pillage the island. The locals had fought hard many other enemies in the past. The bravest men of the island, and of course Hadoula’s husband, got onboard three ships and sailed to fight the enemies.

“Do not be afraid”, said the man to Hadoula, “rest assured that I will return as a winner. But should I die in battle you shall know it, for my men will leave on the sails the black sail clothes that our ships have”.

Hadoula waited for days in agony. It was a terrible day when she saw the ships returning with their black sail clothes up. All the misery of the world was on her shoulders. So she fell to the sea to drown, but as her lifeless body hit the water she turned into a rock. The tragic irony was that her man was alive. They had won the battle and in their excitement forgot to change the sail clothes…

Upon arriving to Skopelos, from west you can’t miss Hadoula. It is a big rock in the middle of the sea just in front of the castle.
