Hunting for the most …delicious pheasant

A rare species and an exquisite animal to hunt for. Its scientific name is Phasianus colchius

Pheasants belong to the same race as chickens, turkeys, helmeted guinea fowls, peacocks, grouses, and quails. It is a medium or large sized bird, with a heavy body, short back and rounded wings. Its beak is bent and powerful. Male pheasants have vivid, bright colours, while females have an earth like colour.

Skopelos has many pheasants, most of them living on Palouki mountain. It is almost certain for you to see a colourful male pheasant, if you choose to take a walk to the monasteries of Agioi Anargyroi and Agia Anna, especially during Spring or Fall. But we have seen a lot of pheasants during Summer time too, near the top of Palouki. What surprised us was that they didn’t look scared by our presence and we had the chance to take a closer look, and admire them. We also glazed at the wonderful view of the nearby islands Skantzoura (deserted) and Alonisos (which has a lot of tourism activity). Pheasants go out during daylight and despite the fact that it is a bird that lives mostly on the ground it cuddles on trees. Pheasants do not fly like birds but are great runners. They only fly when they are in an emergency and that is much harder on rainy days. It has a very developed sight and hearing. Pheasants build their nests under bushes and use them as a hide when they are in danger. It hatches 8-15 eggs annually and their colour varies from olive-brown to green-grey. It is an omnivorous bird and its diet is mostly vegetal (80-90%) and less zoic (10-20%). It is a strictly monogamic bird.
