Dolphins of Sporades

According to Greek mythology, dolphins would always escort Poseidon the sea god, whenever he was traveling on his golden cart, flying above the waves. Dolphins where humans that turned into animals –according to the myth- and they used to be fearsome pirates, who sailed the seas, took over other ships and killed their crews.

One day a captain prayed to Dionysos, to turn him into a lion and eat the pirates. The god heard the sailor and granted his wish, but he also granted the pirates wish, who wished they could turn into fish so as to escape from the lion, and swim away. That is why all dolphins having great regrets for having killed so many sailors now help them and escort them in their journeys.

There is no better place than the seas of Sporades and Skopelos, if you want to observe one of the cleverest creatures that live in the water. Should you see dolphins from a boat you will think that you are watching some aquarium show and if you happen to be on a smaller or private boat you might even be able to swim with them, or you can just listen to some of the stories, that every captain and sailor has to say, especially those who live in Blo, about these magnificent creatures.

Sailing from the port of Saint Constantinos, or Volos, to Skopelos you can often see dolphins playing near the ships front hull. Sailors have been observing these wonderful creatures for centuries, as they accompany them to their journeys. This specific behavior of dolphins has never been scientifically explained. Many people state that their purpose is more practical, in a way. The ship’s movement in the water offers an effortless travel for the dolphins, thus allowing them to save their powers.

However dolphins never stay near the ship for too long, a fact that strengthens the view that dolphins just like to play around and have a great curiosity for people. The skin of the dolphin is very sensitive and the movement in the water gives them a very pleasant sensation. We know for a fact that they love physical contact and that is why they like so much to swim having their body touching the ship’s hull.

Dolphins belong to large mammals, like their close relatives, the whales. The first dolphins evolved some 65.000.000 years ago and experts say that they used to be large land mammals, who evolved into amphibians first and then into fish, in order to adapt to the sea.

A dolphin can jump as high as 3 meters above the water, has more teeth than any other mammal on earth, which are conical and they are useful more for holding the food than cutting it. They feed at about the same time everyday, and the feeding lasts for about an hour. In their groups an organized hierarchy is always noticeable.

Many people suffering from various serious diseases, from depression to AIDS, have reported important changes, especially psychological and emotional, after their contact with dolphins.

Plutarch once said:

“Dolphins are granted with the value that all philosophers seek. Selfless solidarity and friendship”.
