The lifer’s treasure

Many years ago a young man from Skopelos was doing his military service. Due to a small offence he was held in a jail of Volos (city close to Skopelos) for a couple of days.

There he met a lifer, a former thief. When the lifer found out that the young man was from Skopelos, he told him about a treasure that he had hidden on the island. The thief draw on the wall of the cell the map with the exact locations of treasure. The lifer knew that he would never get out of prison again, so he told the young soldier not to forget him when he would find the treasure and maybe bring him some cigarettes some day, or perhaps some flowers on his grave…

The young man returned to Skopelos upon finishing his service and got a job as a carrier with his donkey. Being a little dumb he paid no attention to the words of the lifer.

One night, drunk as he was, he told his boss about the lifer and his treasure, which was buried near a spring in Vromoneri and inside a wall near the spring of Aloupi. The boss of the young man pretended not to care, but the next day bought the land of Aloupi that belonged to an old woman. After a while the man tore down the wall and found a barrel filled with gold coins.

Then he went to Vromoneri were he looked for the rest of the treasure. He found it inside a plane-tree which had grew and had the treasure hidden. He cut down the tree and found another chest with gold. He became a very rich man and bought many fields in the area he had found the treasure.

The boy kept on with his life without ever knowing what he had missed!
