The shepard and the fairy

On the east side of Palouki mountain, the people of Skopelos began to build the monastery of Taxiarhis, in a place called Vatos, some 200 years ago. But when the walls reached the first meter in height, the construction could not be completed! The builders would still build, but in a strange way the walls would not get any higher. As this wasn’t enough already, every night the walls would move by themselves, and would set in another place that was southeast and half an hour further than the builders would set them! The builders were persistent and they finally managed to finish the monastery, which is saved until today, in a pretty good shape, while you can also visit the first building which is half finished!

A shepard lived nearby, some years ago. He was young around 25 and almost 2 meters tall. He had countless goats and a large fortune. Most Spring nights, he would sit outside his stable and play the flute. One night he was too tired to play his flute, so he went to bed earlier than usually. He woke up, after a while, because he heard a sweet melody. And he then saw the most beautiful girls dancing in his presence. He was trying to understand what was going on, when a girl grabbed him and the next thing he knew was that he was dancing with them. He then remembered something his grandfather once told him, should he ever see a fairy, he could have her forever only if he would steel her scarf.

The shepard didn’t made any further thoughts on the matter. He took the scarf of the most beautiful fairy, as they were dancing without anyone noticing. When the dawn came the fairies one by one kissed the shepard end left, except, of course, the one that had no scarf. He took her with him to the town and they got married. After a while they had a lovely child together, a fairy child.

One day the fairy found her scarf and she disappeared together with the fairy child. When the shepard came back to his house, he saw what had happened. From this day he was for ever sad and his only consolation was his flute with which he used to play sad songs every night. He never saw the fairy or his child again.

The shepard’s stable is on the way to the Saint Taxiarhis monastery, in Vatos. The shepard passed away last year…

Vatos is the only place on earth where you can meet a fairy only during full moon in May..

Go there, wait until midnight to meet the fairy and enjoy the sun rising from the Aegean sea next morning!
