King Stafylos

After the battle between the Titans and the Cyclops some giant rocks that fell in the Aegean sea stayed inhabited for thousands of years. But because mount Olympos was near them, and Zeus would throw many thunders on them, these rocks had a lot of plants and lots of running water.

4000 years ago Cretans from Knosos, with Stafylos as their leader, who was sun of Dionysos (god of wine) and Ariadnes, took over the island and named it PEPARITHOS in honor of Peparithos, brother of Stafylos.

In 1936 a grave with rich endings was found in the area that is still called Stafylos. Among the findings is the sword of king Stafylos, which has a golden handle and it is nowadays kept in the Archaeological Museum of Athens.

Peparithos reached its peak at the end 5th and the beginning of 6th century a.D., creating a series of silver coins and maintaining commercial contact with other cities of the Aegean.

In the beginning of the 4th century a.D., Peparithos has its full independence thus allowing the city to have its own coins, which had on one side, the head of Dionysos and on the other a grape, which was the sign of the island from the Archaic times.

We also know that by the middle of the 4th century a.D. Peparithos was, among other islands, a naval base for the Athenians and it is possible that during this time the temples and towers, that are saved until today, were built!

In the ancient years the island had three towns. One of them was called Evinos (goodwine), because at the time it produced “good wine”.

Since then the island changed occupation a lot of times, Byzantines, Francs, Pirates and Moslems passed through this land, but the one thing that is still the same here is the quality of the wine of Skopelos.

Skopelos, having a very fertile and smooth land as well as an excellent climate, always had tree farms and vineyards which produced the famous “Skopelos wine” which Kaisarious Dapontes included, in the 19th century, among the most important things in the world!

As a matter of fact recent researches proved that the quality of the wine was so good that it was exported to the furthest regions of Efksinos Pontos.

Today 4000 years after the first inhabitants of Skopelos, wine is still a trademark here.

And as the locals say: “There is nothing more enjoyable when the night comes than drinking your “Skopelos wine”, eating a famous “Skopelos cheese pie” in some traditional fishing village of the island.
